Learning Objectives
1. Define effective supervision and management and distinguish the responsibilities of supervisors and managers.
2. Explain how management practices affect employees, patients, quality, safety, compliance, productivity, culture, and organizational performance.
3. Identify the personal and professional value of mastering management.
4. Recognize the traits, behaviors, and skills required to supervise and manage effectively.
5. Evaluate how leadership, peers, employees, vendors, suppliers, policies, processes, systems, and technology support or hinder management performance.
6. Identify personal, interpersonal, operational, and organizational barriers to effective management.
7. Strengthen practical skills in communication, expectation-setting, listening, coaching, delegation, accountability, decision-making, documentation, and escalation.
8. Develop and validate five management musts and five additional important management practices.
9. Apply management principles to realistic workplace situations and operational challenges.
10. Create a practical 30-, 60-, and 90-day action plan for applying and sustaining the learning.

Session 1: Management Foundations
Central questions:
• What is management?
• How is supervision different from management?
• Why is effective management important?
• What is in it for you to master management?
Key topics:
• Defining management
• Supervisory responsibility and managerial accountability
• Managing work versus performing work
• Authority, responsibility, and accountability
• The impact of management on employees, patients, culture, quality, and results
• Personal and professional benefits of management mastery
Session 2: Management Traits, Skills, and Environment
Central questions:
• What traits are necessary to manage well?
• What skills must effective supervisors and managers develop?
• How can the work environment support management effectiveness?
Key topics:
• Integrity, credibility, self-awareness, courage, consistency, and accountability
• Communication, listening, judgment, adaptability, and emotional intelligence
• Coaching, delegation, employee development, and decision-making
• Support from leadership, peers, employees, vendors, and suppliers
• Policies, processes, systems, technology, and escalation pathways
• Control, influence, escalation, and acceptance
Session 3: Barriers, Accountability, and Best Practices
Central questions:
• What stops us from managing well?
• How should managers respond to performance and behavioral concerns?
• What should every effective supervisor and manager consistently do?
Key topics:
• Personal, interpersonal, operational, and organizational barriers
• Conflict avoidance, delayed action, emotional reactivity, and inconsistent follow-through
• Unclear expectations, competing priorities, silos, and weak processes
• Coaching, corrective feedback, difficult conversations, and documentation
• Developing and validating class management standards
Five Management Musts:
1. Model the standards you expect.
2. Clarify expectations and standards.
3. Communicate consistently and confirm understanding.
4. Address performance and behavior concerns early.
5. Make sound decisions and escalate appropriately.

• Managing competing priorities and cross-department challenges
• Knowing when to act, consult, delegate, document, or escalate
• Process improvement, responsible technology use, confidentiality, and compliance
• Emotional resilience and leading through change
• 30-, 60-, and 90-day implementation planning
